THE GLASBROOK FIELD

(click on the
picture for a larger version)
In the late 1930's a delegation of workers
from the Penrhiwceiber Colliers (they included Mr Williams
Peacock who is still alive today) approached the management of
the colliery which was then owned by Powell duffryn for the use
of a portion of land for recreational purposes for the villagers
of the area of Penrhiwceiber.
The land had been used by
the colliery as a timber yard at that time timber was the main
supports used underground.
Permission was granted by the company thus
the Glasbrook Recreational Field came into being.
The two football teams who
had initial use of the field were Penrhiwceiber Powell Duffryn
and Tynte Rovers, who still play on the field.
Penrhiwceiber are now called Penrhiwceiber Rangers.
In 1956 with the financial
help of CISWO (Coal
Industry Social Welfare Organisation ) vast improvements
took place, a new boundary wall was built, the field was re-laid
with thousands of tons of soil being brought in, and a new stand
and terracing were built for the benefit of members of the
public.
To run and maintain the
field, the Glasbrook Recreation Committee was set up. The
members were all men with ties to the mining industry.
To finance the running of
the field, a weekly prize draw was set up, the main prize being
£100.
After the closure of the
colliery in 1985, the committee acquired extra land and the
field was extended to the regulation size football field, and a
new stand was built.
In 1998, the changing rooms
were refurbished inside and out, with a grant from Entrust.
As was in the late 1930s, the main aim of the
Glasbrook Committee is to run and maintain the Glasbrook Field
on behalf and for the benefit of the people of the area of
Penrhiwceiber, hopefully free of charge.
